“BOS’UN CALL”

This is an actual Royal Navy Bos’un call. This call was used on HMS ARK ROYAL during the Falkland Island War in the early 1980’s.  I acquired the call while my submarine USS RAY SSN 653 visited Portsmouth England in 1986.

The scrimshaw is a tribute to the birth and evolution of the United States Navy. On one side is depicted the first ship of the Continental Navy HANNAH, as she rounds into the wind on a new tack. The Anchor is symbolic of a firm determination and 1775 is the year our Navy was officially founded.  This side is done on darker Mammoth Ivory and in monotone to symbolize a new and untested Navy, whose future was anything but certain.

The other side depicts the famous NIAGRA who, under Perry, defeated a British Squadron on Lake Erie. It was after this battle Perry penned the famous cry, “We have met the enemy and he is ours.” This side is in lighter Mammoth Ivory and in color to denote the Navy’s contribution to winning the war. It was after this conflict the United States was considered a real World Power.

The Bos'un call is complete with regulation lanyard tied with Flat Senneit and Turks Head knots.
